Irish Mark Francis' (b. 1962) abstract paintings communicate through a formal language. Repetition of similar structural elements form a logic, which nevertheless is multifarious. Simple vertical lines and knots in many shapes float on the surface of the canvas and give form to something more than an abstract pattern. Solid lines, transparent layers, knots, straight and curvy lines on top fill out the works and give form to the sound of cicadas and cellular clusters. Mark Francis explores the effects of how background, surface and layers in between can collide, meet and work with and against each other. The repetitive patterns even create a sense of a continuation of the structure outside the canvas or paper.
