JAB rugs designed by Staffan Tollgard

Splash rug by Staffan Tollgard for JAB

The Scandinavian notion of the Red Thread has been central to my work as an interior designer for over ten years. I have used it as a powerful metaphor to describe the journey towards the creative DNA of each project we have worked on – the heart of the matter that connects interior, architecture and environment; the visual or creative motif that tells our client’s story using the language of design.

For my first collection of rugs I have been able to make the red thread a reality. We explored how each rug could tell the story of the artistry of JAB Anstoetz’s artisans, of the processes that make their rugs so creatively rich and valuable. At the same time we used the metaphor of change and of revelation as a vehicle for these techniques.

Luxury is back in style – bring on the new bling!

Staffan recently sat down with Katrina Burroughs from The Sunday Times to talk about luxury. Here is a sneak peak from the article featured in the Home section of The Sunday Times, July 6th:

STHome

Staffan Tollgard, an architectural interior designer of high-end homes, is delighted: “I feel that the past 10 years of contemporary luxury in London has been MDF dipped in gold. No more, I say!” Muttering something that sounds like “lipstick on a pig”, he explains that he has been scouting for small furniture workshops around the world to find the most stylish and interesting pieces to introduce to his clients.

Tollgard’s tips, both from New York, are Apparatus, a design studio that uses brass, etched glass, leather and porcelain to make lighting (www.apparatusstudio.com ), and Mark Albrecht, who creates elegant furniture in steel, leather and hardwood (www.markalbrechtstudio.com ).

Great design holds a story

Taraxacum Ceiling & Wall Lamp by Flos

At Staffan Tollgard we believe that great design holds a story.

For contemporary lighting company Flos, each piece in their collection has its own anecdote or story providing the inspiration behind the design.

The Taraxacum 88 was designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1988 and is an update of his first Taraxacum that was created almost 30 years earlier.

The Taraxacum, which is the generic name for the dandelion flower, was inspired by the idea of creating a light source to replace the classic chandelier. The structure is formed by five pressed polished aluminium triangles with 15 clear Globolux lamps housed around the structure.

The chandelier has a very unique personality and is able to give great character to the environments in which it is inserted, like the flower of the dandelion, ready to fly away at the first gust of wind.

Extend Mirrors

The Extend Mirrors designed by neri&hu were inspired by the bamboo ladders commonly found assuming multiple functions around the Chinese household.

They lean on the floor in a casual manner, as ladders do, and can be used alone or as an interesting ensemble of many ladders with varying heights on the wall.

We think these solid hardwood mirrors look amazing in our Design Store but know that they would make a great addition to any bedroom or hallway.

All things retro

We are delighted to announce that we are now a retailer of JL Moller who make beautiful mid-century dining chairs. These chairs are design classics and still made in the original factory in Denmark. One of their most famous pieces is Model 62 and we are looking forward to receiving them in the Design Store next month.

PP Mobler manufacture exclusive, hand-made pieces from Hans Wegner’s phenomenal design library. We love the “Round chair”, the “Valet chair” and the “Papa bear chair”.

The ‘Utility’ Collection

Posted by & filed under Showroom.

The ‘Utility’ Collection by Stellarworks + Neri&Hu is starting to become very popular amongst designers and specifiers worldwide, and we currently have a couple of pieces from this collection in the Showroom, so you can come see them here.

Staffan Tollgard Design Store is the only place in the UK to currently have them, so we feel very lucky!

The Utility Collection is a series of seating inspired by a sense of utility, representing the word’s economic definition for a preference over something good for service, function, and efficiency.

It is a no-nonsense deliberation of durable, comfortable chairs, barstools, and stools, to recall industrial aesthetics from factory and school-house furniture with a slightly over-done artificial chic-ness for a dash of contemporary sophistication.

The collection is particularly suitable for hospitality projects, for its design versatility and aesthetic flexibility. It incorporates many qualities of two opposing worlds-masculine yet soft and comfortable; industrial yet sophisticated; utilitarian yet fashionable; contemporary yet possess old-world details.

One of our very favourite brands in our store and one that we frequently use in our Interior Design projects Neri & Hu have been named Wallpaper* Magazine’s Designers of the Year.

Up against every practising designer in the world, this is a pretty phenomenal achievement.

Neri & Hu have also been awarded a “Perspective” Design Award for the “Ming” Series for StellarWorks.
